in Wien ist man äußerst schlecht auf Fürstenberg zu sprechen. Wolfgang Mayer-König (63), Großmeister des Ordens "Mérito navali – Pour le mérite", sagt fassungslos, einen solchen "Mangel an Courtoisie" habe er noch nicht erlebt. Den traditionsreichen Orden – aus purem Gold im Wert von 20 000 Euro – dürfen laut Statut nur zwölf Personen gleichzeitig haben, zu Lebzeiten. Sie verpflichten sich, dass er nach ihrem Tod zurückgegeben wird, damit neue Kandidaten ausgezeichnet werden können. "Auch mein Freund Joki hat das zugesagt", seufzt Mayer-König. Nun ist der alte Fürstenberg schon seit siebeneinhalb Jahren tot, aber die Wiener haben ihren Orden noch immer nicht zurück. Und Kandidaten wie ein orthodoxer Patriarch oder ein schwedischer Anatom, die Mayer-König auf seiner Liste hat, können nicht ausgezeichnet werden. Denn daheim auf der Baar hat Junior Heinrich Gefallen an dem Goldzierrat gefunden. Erst ließ das Adelshaus verlauten, der Orden sei nicht auffindbar, dann fand ihn der Archivar, durfte ihn aber nicht hergeben. Der Fürst habe entschieden, ihn seiner Sammlung einzuverleiben, erfuhren die Wiener. Man hätte ihn gerne gefragt, ob er glaubt, dass er auf diese Weise neben dem Orden auch die Meriten des Vaters erwirbt, doch eine Bürodame lässt uns wissen: "Dazu geben wir keine Stellungnahme ab."

Contemporary quarter blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, two fore-edge metal clasps and catches (upper joint cracked, leather darkened and scuffed, corners of board chipped, some restoration to binding and endpapers replaced). Provenance: Carl Ley, his stamp on inside of upper cover; purchased from John R. Keating 1976.

THIS HANDSOMELY WRITTEN AND VIGOROUSLY ILLUSTRATED Schembart book appears from the presentation inscription to have been an unredeemed deposit with the city pawnbroker Frantz Coëler. He hoped his gift of the book would be reciprocated by payment, albeit less than he had advanced.

Der Südkurier, vor der Pressezensurkammer Opfer der fürstlichen Anwälte, hat ein Skandälchen ausgegraben, das weiteres Licht auf den "Fürsten" als Vorbild wirft.

[I]n Wien, kümmert sich ein Jurist namens Heinrich Kellner als Justitiar der ehrwürdigen Stiftung, welche den hochkarätig-seltenen Orden „Pour le Mérite“ an verdiente Persönlichkeiten vergibt, um die Stiftungsverwaltung. Und hat gewöhnlich mit einer so ehrenwerten Gesellschaft wie dem Schriftsteller Martin Walser, dem Architekten Norman Foster oder dem Schriftsteller Umberto Eco zu tun. Aber Dr. Kellner hat sich auch um einen schwierigen Kandidaten zu kümmern: Heinrich zu Fürstenberg.

Mit dem nämlich liegt der Wiener Jurist und damit die renommierte Ordens-Stiftung in einem erbitterten Clinch. Es geht dabei um die Rückgabe des Ordens und dessen symbolischen Insignien, welche die Stiftung einst dem verstorbenen Fürsten Joachim auf Lebzeiten verliehen hat. Beharrlich aber weigert sich dessen Erbe Fürst Heinrich, das schmucke blaue Kreuz samt Bruststern und damit den förmlichen Ordensbesitz der Stiftung zurückzugeben, wie dies alle bisherigen Nachkommen der Träger seit 1740 – darunter Papst Johannes Paul II oder der ägyptische Staatspräsident Anwar el Sadat – mit aller Selbstverständlichkeit getan haben. Auch Andreas Wilts, der Archivar bei Fürstenberg, hatte nach Anmahnung aus Wien diese „Rückstellung“ bereits avisiert. Doch dann kreuzte Fürst Heinrich in diese Absicht und entschied, den Orden im krassen Widerspruch zu den Stiftungsstatuten seiner privaten Sammlung einzuverleiben.

Das Problem der europaweit agierenden Stiftung: Weil die Zahl der Ordensträger begrenzt ist, Fürst Heinrich als Joachim Erbe aber als Träger nicht in Frage kommt (sei er für das Ansehens des Ordens doch „eine ernste Belastung“, schrieb Kellner jetzt in einem Brief an Fürstenberg), werde durch den Vorgang die Nachfolge eines neuen Ordensträgers blockiert. Also dringt man in Wien inzwischen in recht geharnischter Manier auf Herausgabe und kündigte in einem Schreiben vom 19. Februar gar strafrechtliche Konsequenzen wegen mutmaßlicher Unterschlagung an. Und ausdrücklich schlägt darin die Stiftung jede künftige Förderung durch Fürstenberg aus. Eine solche sei, so heißt es aus Wien, „in reputativer Hinsicht nicht gerade eine Wohltat.“
